On 1 August 2025, a striking new attraction opened between the two ski slopes at De Wijchense Berg: the Mega TubeSlide. The 110-metre-long tubing slide offers more than twenty seconds of sliding fun for the whole family. Visitors descend 12 metres in a tube and finish their ride on an almost vertical four-metre final slope. <\/p>\n\n
For the Mega TubeSlide, Swedice\u2019s Modislide product line provided the ideal solution. The slide is supported by a freestanding wooden substructure, so its design is not dictated by the natural contours of the hill. This created the freedom to determine the course of the slide and play with shape, speed and the overall ride experience. That is exactly what Modislide is designed for: creating modular tubing attractions that do not depend on a natural slope and can be tailored almost entirely to the location. <\/p>\n\n
The location of the Mega TubeSlide is a great example of this. The slide has been integrated into the space between the two existing ski slopes without sacrificing any skiable area. This allows De Wijchense Berg to make optimal use of the available space while adding an attraction that brings action to the hill beyond the winter season. <\/p>\n\n
Just over a year ago, the Mega TubeSlide at De Wijchense Berg in Wijchen opened to the public. The attraction immediately drew large numbers of visitors and soon caught the attention of both local and national media. More than a year later, interest remains strong. Together with owner Gijs Holl, we look back at the journey leading up to the Mega TubeSlide and his experiences since its opening. <\/p>\n\n
The idea for the Mega TubeSlide first emerged in 2022, shortly after Gijs Holl took over De Wijchense Berg. From the start, he knew he wanted to make more of the location. Skiing would remain an important part of the offering, but Gijs also wanted De Wijchense Berg to appeal to a broader audience and become less dependent on the ski season. <\/p>\n\n
With this in mind, the hospitality offering was further developed and Gijs began looking for activities that would complement what the location already had to offer. The existing slope provided a natural starting point. As he was already familiar with tubing, it quickly came into the picture. During his search, Gijs got in touch with Swedice. <\/p>\n\n
There was no concrete plan at that stage. The initial conversations focused mainly on the hill, the available space and what could be achieved there with tubing. Gijs particularly appreciated this open approach to exploring the possibilities together. <\/p>\n\n
\u201cWe basically just started imagining the possibilities: what could we do here? What might work? Where could we take this?\u201d<\/p>\n\n
Before taking the step towards a permanent TubeSlide, Gijs first wanted to find out whether tubing would actually be a good fit for De Wijchense Berg. So, they rented a number of tubes and tried out the activity on the existing ski slope. It worked well and became the basis for the pop-up TubeSlide, which returned the following year. This allowed Gijs to experience first-hand how tubing worked at De Wijchense Berg and how visitors responded to it. <\/p>\n\n
During that period, Gijs became increasingly convinced that he wanted to move towards a permanent TubeSlide. <\/p>\n\n
\u201cI knew pretty quickly: this is fun. This is something we eventually want to have on the hill.\u201d<\/p>\n\n
Building on the experience gained with the pop-up, Gijs and Swedice continued developing plans for a permanent TubeSlide. At that stage, the exact design had not yet been determined. It gradually took shape, taking into account the available space and how the slide could best be integrated into the existing surroundings. This ultimately resulted in the current layout, with the slide running around the basin. <\/p>\n\n
As the plans became more concrete, several Swedice colleagues became involved in the project. Gijs particularly appreciated being able to communicate directly with the person who could help him with his specific question at that moment. The direct communication, accessibility and technical expertise within the team all stood out to him as positive aspects of the collaboration. <\/p>\n\n
\u201cAt some point, I knew exactly who to contact with each question.\u201d<\/p>\n\n
After two summers with the pop-up, the next step was taken and the Mega TubeSlide could be realised.<\/p>\n\n
On 1 August, the Mega TubeSlide opened to the public. And it certainly did not go unnoticed. De Wijchense Berg had already promoted the new attraction in advance, and there was plenty of curiosity in Wijchen as well. During construction, people regularly stopped by to see what was taking shape on the hill. So even before the first official ride, Gijs could already see that there was plenty of interest. What he did not know was how that interest would translate into visitor numbers once the Mega TubeSlide opened. <\/p>\n\n
It soon became clear that the Mega TubeSlide was attracting attention beyond the local area. In de Buurt Nijmegen visited De Wijchense Berg and produced a video about the new attraction, which Gijs says received around two million views. Omroep Gelderland then picked up the story, followed by the Jeugdjournaal. With each piece of media coverage, the Mega TubeSlide reached a wider audience \u2013 and from that point on, things really took off. <\/p>\n\n
Visitors flocked to Wijchen to experience the Mega TubeSlide for themselves. At the busiest times, waiting times reached around an hour and the car park was full. The hospitality facilities also benefited greatly from the additional footfall. What started as curiosity in the local area quickly grew into a level of interest that Gijs could never have anticipated. <\/p>\n\n
\u201cWe got off to a start we wouldn\u2019t even have dared to dream of. No one expected it to get so busy so quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n
More than a year after the opening, Gijs is still enthusiastic about the Mega TubeSlide. The collaboration with Swedice has continued as well. Communication remains direct, and whenever something comes up, Gijs can still turn to the team for support. For example, when the slide did not run as smoothly during a period of freezing weather, Swedice and De Wijchense Berg worked together to find ways to improve it. According to Gijs, the Mega TubeSlide is now running well again. <\/p>\n\n
Just as important is the feedback Gijs receives from his visitors every day. According to him, the reactions are still very positive, and children in particular leave little doubt about what they think. \u201cThis is the coolest thing I\u2019ve ever done,\u201d is something he hears regularly. Some children even call it the best day of their lives. And it often doesn\u2019t stop at just one ride: in the end, it is usually the parents who have to say that enough is enough. Adults are also keen to experience the Mega TubeSlide for themselves. <\/p>\n\n
For Gijs, this is ultimately where the strength of tubing lies. The Mega TubeSlide adds something for visitors of different ages, makes De Wijchense Berg\u2019s overall offering more complete and gives people an extra reason to visit the hill outside the ski season. Its impact goes beyond the TubeSlide itself: the additional visitors also bring more footfall to other parts of the location, including the hospitality facilities. <\/p>\n\n
When we ask Gijs how he looks back on the decision to install the Mega TubeSlide more than a year later, he does not have to think twice.<\/p>\n\n
\u201cWe\u2019re absolutely delighted with it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n
He is equally clear when it comes to other leisure operators. For Gijs, the value lies not only in the attraction itself, but above all in what it adds to the overall offering: an activity that appeals to both young and old, can be enjoyed all year round and gives people another reason to visit. <\/p>\n\n
\u201cIt gives you a more complete offering, with something fun for everyone. It keeps bringing people in and gives them a reason to visit. It\u2019s simply a fantastic attraction to have all year round.\u201d<\/p>\n\n
